New restaurant opens in entertainment district

The Andaman Thai Restaurant opened for business Thursday in the entertainment district at the intersection of Hickory Street and Industrial Street.
The restaurant's new location was chosen based on Industrial Street becoming the new center for Denton entertainment and an area that was growing, said Achava Tanadrop, manager of Andaman Thai Restaurant, in an interview last year.
The Thai restaurant moved from its location on Elm Street and will lease about 1,800 square feet of space in the renovated Millard Heath Building.
"We want to be part of something," Tanadrop said. "We've been here for five years, and we feel like we're part of Denton and we want to be part of this."

Denton rehabilition hospital facility sells for $15 million

Select Medical Rehabilitation Hospital of Denton's 43,600-square-foot building on Scripture Street was recently purchased for $15 million by Healthcare Trust of America. The recent purchase won't impact the rehabilitation hospital's operations, which signed a long-term lease for the building, said Carolyn Curnane, a spokeswoman for the Denton rehabilitation hospital.
"Select Medical Corporation was not involved in the real estate transaction and we continue to have a long term lease within the facility," Curnane said.
The acquisition of the building is attractive because of its proximity to a prominent hospital, strong demographics and modern state-of-the-art facility, said Mark D. Engstrom, executive vice president of acquisitions for Healthcare Trust of America, in a written release.
The Denton acquisition strengthens the Arizona-company's $223 million profile of healthcare properties, he said.
The property appraised for $9.99 million in 2009 and was previously owned by Denton Med L.P., according to information from the Denton County Appraisal District.

El Fenix working on new Denton location

El Fenix, a Tex-Mex restaurant chain, is working on the building that housed Colter's BBQ off Loop 288 in front of the mall, according to permit information on the building.
The restaurant has locations in Lewisville, Grapevine and Dallas.

ALDI to hold shift manager hiring event on Wed., Dec. 9 in Dallas

ALDI will host a shift manager hiring event for Dallas-area stores on Wednesday, Dec. 9. The company is seeking full-time managers to work in Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex stores that will open in Spring 2010. Applications will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Park Central - Dallas located at 7800 Alpha Road in Dallas and the Crowne Plaza located at 700 Avenue H. East in Arlington.

According to its release, ALDI, a discount supermarket, provides full health care (including medical, dental and vision insurance) plus 401k for employees who work more than 20 hours per week. ALDI shift managers will start at $10 per hour plus an additional $4 premium when acting as store manager, said the release.

Shift managers will enjoy a all expenses will be paid throughout the eight-week remote training period. A high school diploma or equivalency is required for shift manager applicants.

DATCU named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas 2010

DATCU was recently named as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas 2010.

The awards program was created in 2006 and is a project of TEXAS MONTHLY, the Texas Association of Business (TAB), the Texas State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (TSC-SHRM) and Best Companies Group, according to an announcement released today.

The Best Companies to Work for in Texas 2010 list is made up of 85 companies. The winners are selected from company culture and employee responses. DATCU was named the 14th best company in 2006, 4th in 2008, and 2nd in 2009. According to the release, the final 2010 rankings will be announced in January followed by an awards ceremony later in the month.

Mall to serve as aircraft hangar

U.S. Aviation of Denton has placed a Light Sport Aircraft in the Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville for the holidays until Dec. 27.
The mall will serve as an aircraft hangar for one month and will help sell the plane and other gift certificate offerings through U.S. Aviation.
The ticket price of the plane is $140,000 and flight lessons, Discovery Flights and partial ownership of planes are also available.

The Golden Triangle Mall is planning to give away $25,000 in free gift cards to shoppers next weekend through the mall's Cash for Christmas promotion.
The promotion begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 and mirrors the Back-to-School free gift card promotion that was held in September.
The 701 gift cards are valued from $10 to $1,000 each.
There are 350 $10 cards; 190 $25 cards; 100 $50 cards; 40 $100 cards; 15 $250 cards; 4 $500 cards and 2 $1,000.
In September, $20,000 in free gift cards were given away to 777 people.

Holiday Open House on the Square

Several merchants on the Square will host a holiday open house this weekend with refreshments and discounts for holiday shoppers.
The open house is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 14th and again from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 15th.

Inside Argyle's The General Store

Argyle's The General Store has been opened for the past month. Co-owned by Lynn Carrico and Deanie Willis, the store features home decor, fine wines, gourmet foods-to-go and other items.

The General Store will host their Holiday Open House and grand opening events on Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 15 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Carrico and Willis are already taking orders for gift giving and holiday desserts.

Jupiter House Europa now open

The second location of Jupiter House opened for business last week.
The store, at the southwest corner of University Drive and Carroll Boulevard, is being called Europa after one of Jupiter's 49 named moons.
The 1,905-square-foot store has an "Alice in Wonderland in Cuba feel," with handmade chocolate candies and Jupiter House coffee, said Joey Hawkins, who co-owns the shop with his wife, Amy.
Along with the same Cuvee coffee found at Jupiter House, Europa will serve specialty goodies including chocolate-covered strawberries, caramel apples and chocolate-covered espresso beans, he said.
This reporter suggests the chocolate-covered coconut.

Pilot Point's Purple Door Day Spa ribbon cutting

The Purple Door Day Spa held their ribbon cutting Ceremony and grand opening event the afternoon of Wednesday, October 28.

Karen Walterscheid, executive director of the Pilot Point Chamber of Commerce said in a news release the event, attended by 300 guests, was held at renovated Historical Building - one of the oldest brick building in Denton County located at the downtown square.

The Purple Door Day Spa is located at 114 W. Main Street and is owned by Bobbie Jezek.

The new Conn's store in Denton open for business

Although there were only a few pieces of merchandise in the new location of Conn's in Denton on Tuesday, the store was open for business Thursday, said Tommy Herndon, store manager.
The store, in the old Circuit City location at the northeast corner of Loop 288 and Colorado Boulevard, will carry appliances and consumer electronics in the 30,281-square-foot-space.
"It took a lot of hard work and hours," Herndon said.
Officials with Conn's corporate headquarters were unavailable early Thursday afternoon to provide more details. Stay tuned.

TWU's Child Abuse Prevention Society fundraiser tonight

Denton's DoubleDave's Pizzaworks will host a fundraiser for TWU's Child Abuse Prevention Society tonight.

Ten percent of the proceeds from all sales - dining in, carry out or delivery - from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. will be given to the organization.
